About

Kathleen Hutton

Kathleen began her artistic journey as a child growing up in the home of an artist. Her mother was a painter who worked in an impressionistic style, talked about art and took her to museums and galleries.  Art materials were always available, and exploration was encouraged.

Obtaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Illinois State University with a concentration in Sculpture, Kathleen presented her solo BFA exhibition, a single installation piece, comprised of thirty-eight luminous copper and rice paper sculptures, suspended from the ceiling, entitled, “Like a Wind.”

Her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture was earned from VCUArts (Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts), now the #1 public art program in the US. Her Master’s exhibition, entitled, “If I had Wings,” was comprised of six large sculpture works in various media, including cast aluminum, welded steel and mixed media, as well as a series of abstract paintings.

Over the course of her career, Kathleen has explored a variety of media, including installation work, collaboration, bronze and aluminum casting, welded steel, wood carving, mixed media sculpture, oil and acrylic painting, and various styles of printmaking.

Kathleen has exhibited her artwork in Normal, IL, Beverly, MA, Towson, MD, Ashland, VA, Charlottesville, VA, and Richmond, VA.

Kathleen continues to live and work in Richmond, Virginia, where she combines her background in sculpture with painting to create rich landscape and still life paintings and deeply textured allegorical paintings as well as handcrafted art prints and the occasional mixed media sculpture.
